Even
though finding a dog that is completely obedient is rare, you can
encourage its obedience by installing a dog proof fence in your yard.
Before technology devised a more simple way to confine animals like
dogs in backyards, pet owners had to build or buy their own fences.
Not only were they hard to build, but they also can be costly.
But now, with the advent of in-ground fencing systems that give your
dog the freedom to roam in the safety of your own yard, all of this
has become obsolete. For someone like a homeowner, having an in-ground
fence helps to eliminate the chore as well as the cost of maintaining
permanent, visible fence that requires something like paint or stain.
A typical in-ground fence system includes things like an antenna
wire, a transmitter and some kind of a battery-powered receiver or
collar. When your dog comes near the wire that is buried in the ground,
the receiver delivers both a warning sound as well as a mild correction
or a shock if the pet actually ends up crossing the boundary. This
shock typically doesn't hurt, and it usually happens only during the
period during which the dog is being trained.
An electronic fence for a lot that that is something around the size
of 1/4-acre (approximately 500 linear feet), with a kind of a second
electronic boundary within the yard that marls off something else
off limits (like a garden bed), can cost you between $700-$1,000.
Or you can buy a kit to do it yourself for about $100 and likely
save a significant amount of money. However, you need to be ready
to do some hard work if you choose to go this route. The job involves
things like digging holes, laying down the wire, mounting a transformer,
installing the system’s receiver and connecting all of it together.
You can rent something like a power lawn edger to eliminate digging.
Many systems that you purchase can include a training video for you
and your dog. This training video can be viewed as the final piece
of the project. A dog proof fence will be something important for
you to have to keep your dog safe.
