Dog
shock collars administer a mild electric charge through a collar to
the dog. This device is used to train a dog by letting him know when
he had done something wrong, or failed to follow a command. While
this can work for many dogs, there are some important caveats when
using this training equipment.
• A little goes a long way – it is actually easy to abuse
an animal with this device. Be careful to keep the levels of intensity
low and to only use it when necessary.
• The dog must understand what you are trying to convey. To
shock a dog that has no clue what your verbal command is supposed
to get him to do will not benefit from repeated shocking, or any shocking
at all until he is trained well enough to understand and follow commands.
• Some large dogs or rambunctious dogs will disregard the electric
charge. They may even run out of its range or completely freeze when
shocked.
While dog shock collars can be useful when used with prudence and
training, overuse can – and often does prove to be detrimental
or of no use at all.
