The
idea behind all underground
pet fences, regardless of who makes them, is the same. In these
systems there is a transmitter that uses a buried loop of wire in
order to broadcast a radio signal. Usually the signal is pretty simple
– it often is just a simple sine wave, or sometimes possibly
two sine waves that are set at different powers.
The buried wire under the ground acts as if it were an antenna and
it then turns the radio signal into several electromagnetic waves.
The transmitter actually does not use much power at all. This means
that the signal that goes around the wire has a range that is rather
small. This range is estimated to be about 10 or 15 feet.
In some of these systems the wire has two different signals running
through it at once. One of the signals is set at a lower power while
the other is set at a higher power. These systems are advanced because
the collar can detect many different distances from the wire to provide
a variety of levels of correction.
Inside the collar is a small radio receiver that is actually similar
to a $5 radio you would buy at an electronics store.
When this radio moves close enough to the wire that is buried underground,
it receives the signal being transmitted from the wire. The radio
triggers a kind of correction so the dog can understand that he is
nearing the boundary.
The underground wiring is installed around the border of your property
back to the transmitter that should be plugged into a safe, dry location.
Because this can attract lightning, it is recommended that a lightning
rod be installed near the transmitter to prevent potential explosions
or blow-ups.
So, if you want something a little less obtrusive and a little more
high-tech, underground pet fences may fill that need.
